Hawaiian island-hopping itinerary on a Budget

Oahu

Here's a detailed 14-day budget-conscious Hawaiian island-hopping itinerary, focusing on cultural experiences, historical sites, food, and free activities. I've aimed for an average of $350/day, understanding that some days will be cheaper, and others might be a bit more expensive. This assumes you're traveling as a couple or solo and are comfortable with cost-saving measures like cooking your own meals and utilizing free activities. Prices are estimates and can fluctuate. Book accommodations and inter-island flights well in advance, especially during peak season, for the best deals!

We plan to visit in the future and want to make the most out of our stay. Write out your own plan using this itinerary as an example! Last time we went, we picked up visitor information packets/books that we could find to make the most out of our trip.

Important Notes:

* Flights: Inter-island flights are a significant cost. Consider booking with Hawaiian Airlines (often has the most frequent flights) or Southwest (if available on your routes, they can be cheaper). Budget around $50-$150 per flight, depending on the route and time of year. Factor in airport transportation costs, too.

* Transportation: Renting a car is almost essential on most islands for exploring beyond the main tourist areas. Look for deals online and consider renting for only part of your stay. Alternatives include ridesharing (Uber/Lyft, but availability can be limited outside of Honolulu, and public transportation (Oahu has the best system).

* Food: Eating out every meal will quickly blow your budget. Visit local grocery stores (like Foodland, Safeway, or even Costco) to buy breakfast items, snacks, and ingredients for some meals. Look for local plate lunches (affordable and delicious) and happy hour deals.

* Activities: Many of the best things in Hawaii are free: beaches, hiking trails, parks, and scenic drives. Take advantage of these! Look for free cultural events and activities.

* Accommodation: I've suggested a mix of budget-friendly hotels, vacation rentals (Airbnb/VRBO), and hostels. Consider staying slightly outside of the main tourist areas for better prices. Look for places with kitchenettes to save on food costs.

* Luau: Luaus can be expensive. If it is a must-do, look for smaller, local luaus that may be more affordable than the large resort-style ones. If you can swing the cost for the large ones, go for it. It may be a wonderful lifetime experience for you from your trip.

Norway's Midnight Sun

Holding the Midnight Sun Norway was our destination.   My husband and I spent two weeks exploring the cities of Bergen and Trondheim as well as the Islands along the western fjords.   Our Norwegian relative tour guides told us we could not leave Norway without experiencing their midnight sun. We searched for the best place on one of the Islands and found it! The midnight sun was glowing across the horizon off the coast of Norway deep into the summer night.   There was a thrill just for being on top of ancient rocks that lined the coast of the Atlantic as the light was starting to fade in the distant horizon.   Our words and laughter seemed to echo across the rocks as the waves crashed high into the air.   We were not only enjoying the view but the sounds and smell of the open air of the salty ocean.    The glowing sun became a light in our hands as we stood and faced the camera.   As a couple we “held” the sun ...

Rocky Ridge Safari in East Texas

Under the clear blue skies of East Texas is a gem of a drive-through wildlife and safari center called Rocky Ridge Safari that hosts over 25 different species of animals amongst the 200 acres of native trees and smooth red clay winding roads.  A friend asked me to go with her while visiting family in Texas, and I didn't hesitate to say yes! I couldn't believe my luck in the backwoods of Eustace, very close to Canton, was an incredible drive through wildlife center. The trip was a perfect opportunity to do an animal photoshoot and hopefully shoot some great pictures right from the front seat of my friend Linda's car.  We headed out early to be the first car in line when it opened at 10 a.m. since we knew the animals would be hungry and eager to make their way to our car. When you buy your ticket, it also comes with a good size food bag for feeding with each one. The animals were very eager to see us or rather the food we were handing out. I'm not sure I have a favorite f...
